Week Three

52 Weeks to Family Preparedness for Two
Week 3

"There is an old wise saying; Eat it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. Thrift is a practice of not wasting anything. Some people are able to get by because of the absence of expense. They have their shoes resoled, they patch, they mend, they sew, and they save money. They avoid installment buying, and make purchases only after saving enough to pay cash, thus avoiding interest charges. Frugality means to
practice careful economy." - James E. Faust

52 Weeks to Preparedness - Week One

52 Weeks to Family Preparedness for Two
Week 1

Our Church Leaders have asked us to make a concerted effort to obtain our year's supply of food and other essentials. Here are suggestions for a 52 week plan to help us all achieve this. Amounts given are for two people. Adjust the quantities you purchase for the number of family members in your home. We are starting with the basics, in all areas, so if you have already done this then focus on another area you are short, or else start on your two year! Don't just do nothing! The items will change weekly, so keep up with us and take the challenge to become Prepared.

8 Simple Additions to Bean Soups

Like vegetable soups, bean soups are receptive to a wide variety of additions. Try, for example:

1. Scraps of smoked meats, such as ham or bacon (or cook the beans with a ham bone).
2. Precooked vegetables of any type, as long as the flavor does not conflict with that of the soup. Onions, carrots, and celery are almost always appropriate.
3. Any croutons.
4. A teaspoon or more of minced garlic or scallions, added about two minutes before the end of the cooking time.
5. Any spice you like, from jalapenos or other chiles to lots of black pepper to curry powder or other spice mixtures.
6. Diced fresh tomatoes as a garnish.
7. Bean cooking liquid used in place of some or all of the liquid in the soup for a stronger bean flavor.
8. Freshly chopped herbs or quick-cooking greens
